16th Birthday Ideas For Every Budget

Thanks to television shows such as “My Super Sweet 16”, some teens have 16th birthday party ideas that far exceed the budget of their parents. The good news is that it is possible to throw a fabulous birthday party without having to take a second mortgage out on the house.

Here are some tips for 16th birthday ideas that will please both the teen (yes, it IS possible) and the parents.  Some of the ideas cost more than others, but there are sure to be some ideas that everyone can use.

Home Sweet Home

Rather than trying to find some venue at which to host the party, keep it at home. If you have a large backyard, and the climate is right during the birthday month, you will be able to save a lot of money that can be used for other aspects of the party.

Surprise

Need a 16th birthday party idea that will save you from arguing with your teen? Rather than going back and forth with your teen about what they want, you can keep things a whole lot simpler by throwing a surprise party. Of course, you will want the party to be something that your teen will be proud of, so enlist a couple of their best friends so you can get some good advice about what is cool and what is not.

A Family Affair

Often, family members get lost in the shuffle when the teen has a big birthday bash. If you do want to give your teen such a party, consider having another smaller family only celebration.

Set a Budget

If you are going to have a party that the teen will help to plan, you must set a budget at the beginning stages of planning. Be very clear with your teen about the budget and tell him or her that you will not be going over budget. Offer suggestions to your teen about how to divide up the allotted funds and then leave it up to them to make cuts in certain areas if they want to splurge a bit in another.

Cruise for Two

Rather than a party, many teens would be thrilled with the chance to go on a vacation with the family and bring along their best friend.  Take a cruise and let the teens have their own (adjoining) cabin. Go skiing for a long weekend at her favorite place or head to Bermuda for a tropical getaway.

If possible, allow the teen to have some say in the location of the getaway and give her the option of choosing which friend to bring along.

Themes

A theme party can be a fun way to have a memorable party without spending a lot of money. The possible ideas for a theme party are endless. The party could be based around her favorite movie or television show. Murder mystery parties are a lot of fun and do not cost very much. If he or she is a sports fan, you could have a party that revolves around their favorite team or sport.

There are many 16th birthday party ideas that do NOT require a mogul’s budget. Work to make sure that your teen understands that it is not about the amount that you spend, but it is about being surrounded by the people that you love and that love you back – even when your party isn’t better than those featured on MTV.
